Glyph Energy and You!

A beginner's guide to powering Stillaire.

Introduction.

If you're reading this, then you've come to our lovely city of Stillaire, and are curious about how we work! I'm very glad to see you here, and I'm most pleased that you're taking an interest in our most prized development: Glyph Energy!

Gone are the days of relying on coal or on the sun! Glyph Energy is clean, constant, and certified as completely reliable! It powers absolutely everything in Stillaire - yes, it even powers that little Ivytwine of yours!

So what is Glyph Energy?

Glyph Energy gets its name from the strange formations it's found in. We call these 'Glyph Nodes' because of their shape. They appear to be large, complex rocks carved into letters (or, if you will, glyphs) of a very old language that only the very best of our scholars know a few words. The formations have been spelled out as 'bountiful', 'plentiful', 'clean' and 'energy'. Of course, we didn't realize this when we stumbled onto them by accident at first!

The Glyph Nodes are down in the deepest part of Stillaire Mining Facility. Even with the entirety of the Industrial District powered, you'll need high level security passes to get down there. Don't worry about it! This is just to let you know where it's located.

Once Glyph energy was mined, it needed to be processed. That's what the three towers at the outermost points of your map are for! The lower reaches process the energy out of its raw form (highly dangerous stuff, folks - don't go near it!) and into the sustainable force we use in our day to day lives. Turn the switches on in those towers, and presto! We have the power for that District of the city!

Easy as pie, right? You don't have to worry about a damn thing except making sure our expert staff keep those switches flipped!

So you're still interested in Glyph Energy. Great! We'll need to explain exactly what it powers and how. We won't get into any technical hew-haw here; just the basics for beginners.



What are the properties of Glyph Energy?

Glyph Energy has many properties. Physically, it is a gas, light green in colour, which is sent through the silver tubes from the towers all over the city and into the Control Panels in every single building. The raw stuff, which is left over when the refinement of Glyph Energy is used up, is sent back to the towers via the airtight and sealed burnished tubes. This raw formation is an acid green ooze and should not be touched or have the fumes breathed in.

Refined, Glyph Energy can be put to a number of uses, from powering motors to heating homes and lighting the sky. Raw, it's an extremely potent chemical which will eat through human skin in a matter of moments - not that we're saying that to scare you! We just want to let you know what you're up against.

How do I use Glyph Energy?

It's simple, really! Your Energy allotment is sent to the Control Panels in your homes, or the control room in your residential block of flats. If you see a faint, light green hue around the Control Block, to release the Glyph Energy, all you must do is turn the dial from 'Withhold' to 'Release'. It's as simple as that - the raw leftovers are immediately sent back to the Tower via the burnished pipes - you don't need to worry about that!

All Glyph energy should be set to 'release' in the Towers. If you have any reason to believe it's NOT, please contact a member of staff at your District's tower.

What does Glyph Energy Power?

The short - and honest - answer is everything. Literally, it powers everything!

It heats your home and your water quickly and efficiently - none of this waiting around for hours to have a bath, or for the coal fire to warm the room!

It lights the street with a much cleaner and easier to maintain light than traditional oil streetlights, and also allows us to provide lighting to every single home in the Residential District!

It opens and closes the gates to the city, keeping us safe and well.

It safely heats and sterilizes our food for us, as well as allows us to freeze it or keep it cool and fresh.

It sustains the telephone lines enough that we've developed what we call an 'interframe' that allows people to hook up their personal handhelds - what we call 'Ivytwines' - and communicate everywhere!

It allows us to harness horsepower without horses - all of our carts are now self-drawn. Simply power on the Glyph Energy Meter and get behind the wheel!

It has enabled us to make flying machines for easier transport over the city - these are still in their test forms, however, but we're pretty excited by them and just had to mention them here!

Absolutely everything is powered by Glyph Energy. It's wonderful, and extremely sustainable too! This leads us on to the next page, so if you'll please turn over...!

How does Glyph Energy sustain itself?

The amazing thing about Glyph Energy is that the raw material does not get used up. The refinement process, on the other hand, does!

This means that whenever you power something with Glyph Energy, it loses the refined, soft green glow and turns into the bright, acid green of its raw state. Don't worry about this, though! This green schlup is passed into its airtight container beside your Control panel, and is sent via the brass burnished tubes back to the Tower in your District. There, it goes back through the refinement process and becomes clean, fresh and safe again.

... And is sent right back to you, just as fresh as it was when you first used it up!

There's no reason to worry about the refinement process - it's all handled by automated machines deep in the Tower, with overseers to check up on it. It's too complicated a process to explain in a beginner book!

To give you an idea - we have mined from four Glyph Nodes to produce all the Glyph Energy used to power the entire city. We have been using the same raw material for years now, and it has not lost any of its properties!

What is my energy allotment?

Your energy allotment reflects the power that is portioned out for you to completely power your home, work, or living space. It is therefore extremely important that you feed your Allotment Card into the Allotment Slot in your home. This slot is usually attached to the inside of your door.

Once your card is placed into the reader, it will flash your name and the amount of energy you have been allotted. If you simply own your own home, no business, and have not bought any additional Glyph Energy, you will see x1 G. If you own a small business, for example a shop or an eating establishment, you'll get x2 G. If you own a large chain you will see x3 G.



Your Glyph Allotment is renewed at the beginning of every month. If you are running low on Glyph Energy, a message will flash on the screen reader, prompting you to purchase more, or conserve energy. This will be displayed as a percentage button. Under 20% will cause this message to spring up.

If you are worried about your percentage but have not received the warning message, either call or visit the City Hall, where you will find records of your energy consumption, or scan your the green stripe of your Allotment Cards in the Allotment Slot to update the displayed Percentage figure.

To add funds to your card, take it to the City Hall or Stillaire Bank and scan the blue stripe to input credit.
